Crippling Effect of Technology
Technology has not advanced mankind; it has crippled it into being dependent on technology. There was a time when a man could be given two mere tools and could provide for himself shelter and food. Now, people can’t do anything without the aid of some type of technology. This isn’t at all bad, because the whole purpose of inventions is to make life more convenient. Instead of walking around the neighborhood looking for a person, you can just take out your cell phone and call a person. What could possibly be wrong with that? The issue is that people have forgotten what it was like to not have a cell phone and other types of media. If people lose all the technology in their lives, the sad part is that most will truly run around like chickens with their heads chopped off. Society has created a generation of money-hungry and busy individuals. People want things in the fastest and easiest way possible. This is why the Internet was created. Instead of going to the library to research, you can easily read books online. The problem that we face now is that children are growing up and not even knowing what a library is. This fast-paced society and dissatisfaction with reality, is the leading cause of all the social networking websites. Using the most popular websites, Facebook and Twitter, people can keep up to date on all of their friend’s activities and also create for themselves a fantasy person. So many people behave a different way online than in their real lives. Society has also created this mindset that people can be whoever they create themselves to be. Using Facebook, a person can change their popularity over night. The addiction of Facebook and other social networking sites is due to people’s want to be in the know. There are so many gossip websites such as MediaTakeOut.com and WorldStarHipHop.com that focus on pure gossip about celebrities and any random things the publishers think people are interested. Some time in history, someone thought that you weren’t cool if you didn’t know all the juicy details. I’m guessing this stirred in high school where the “in crowd” spread rumors and gossip and those who didn’t know where considered outcasts. This has had a widespread effect on society. Everyone wants to know the new scoop. It has become a fetish that people can’t ignore. I hate feeling as though I’m missing out on something, whether it be information about friends or an activity. This has developed in many people which is why the article brings out that people don’t mind interrupting their meals for a text message, waking up in the middle of the night to tweet about the nightmare that just woke them up or even to just post on Facebook in the middle of the night. Now I understand why my parents always look at me funny when I am texting. This whole new phase is crazy to them. But even some adults have been affected and are now addicted to Facebook and their blackberries. It will never end. As long as technology continues to advance, the makers and governments will have people wrapped around their fingertips.
